Our Impact to Emergency Relief for Myanmar Earthquakr Survivors

On March 28th, a devastating magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Central Myanmar, with the epicenter located at the country’s second largest city. It affected roughly 20 million people and left 51,800 people displaced. Hospitals, bridges, and schools were severely damaged, making travel, access to supplies and the provision of medical support extremely difficult.

Good Neighbors conducted an immediate emergency response in Myanmar and Thailand, including rapid needs assessments by Good Neighbors Myanmar. Collaborating with other local organizations, GNMMR delivered food, hygiene & medical supplies, and mosquito nets, though a large number of residents remained in need of critical supplies, including shelter kits. Civilians in the area were already experiencing violence and worsening humanitarian conditions, and the recent calamity places already vulnerable individuals in further danger.

Good Neighbours Canada (GNCA) joined the efforts to raise funds in support of our Myanmar neighbours. Thanks to the generous support of our donors, we were able to raise a total of $10,000 for GNMMR’s emergency relief & recovery efforts. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of the individuals and business who contributed. Your generosity has provided survivors of the earthquake with life-saving aid.

GNCA wants to give a special thanks to Presbyterian Church Zion Korean for donating $1,500 and Kwanglim Methodist Church for donating $3,000.

Through the collective efforts of Good Neighbors International, a total of US$200,000 has been raised to support Myanmar. Our initial intervention helped roughly 8,237 households across 43 villages in Central Myanmar.

Myanmar Recovery Plan

More than 50,000 homes remain destroyed, and there is still much work to be done in the affected areas. GNMMR is now moving onto the next stage focusing on recovery. Our collective goal is to rebuild homes while creating sustainable, long-term resilience solutions that can prevent and minimize the impact of future disasters.

You can still give your support to our neighbours in Myanmar.

The OCIC delegation also met with representatives from the Korea NGO Council for Overseas Development Cooperation (KCOC), a Korean NGO network for international development cooperation. They focused on strategic alignment, shared challenges and updates to KCOC’s projects.

GNCA will continue to raise funds and support GNMMR in rebuilding the lives of survivors. We encourage everyone who wants to further help the children in Myanmar to donate and raise awareness, helping us raise funds for their recovery.

GNCA is committed to providing full transparency to all its supporters. We will continue to report on the progress of the situation and meaningful developments in the plan. Let’s all continue to bring hope to communities in need.
