Funding success: Supporting equity-seeking entrepreneurs in the city of Toronto

With thanks to the City of Toronto, Good Neighbors Canada is proud to announce that we have received funding to support a target of 20 microentrepreneurs through our Good4People program this year; a branch of the Goods4Causes social enterprise which supports artisans here in Canada to grow their business and supplement their income. The programming made possible by this fund will include entrepreneurial workshops, craft skills workshops, networking events, access to specialist guest speakers’ advice and tuition, and free-of-charge sales opportunities through online and offline Goods4Causes promotion. We look forward to welcoming new microentrepreneurs to our Good4People community, which is now open to refugees, newcomers, Indigenous Peoples, people of colour, LGBTQ+ individuals and people experiencing poverty or housing insecurity.

The first of our City-funded events, an entrepreneurial workshop, took place on April 29th 2023, and was facilitated by Social Enterprise Officer, Angela Itchon, and Financial Inclusion & Entrepreneurship professor, Dr Maggie Zeng. Praises poured in from participants who described it as a “beautiful and meaningful workshop”, where they were able to learn and keep themselves motivated in maximizing their income potentials.

Participants were first able to identify and set their current business goals, the resources that they have and the possible strengths and weaknesses of their forthcoming journey in achieving these goals. The second half of the workshop was focused on exploring business models, accessing financial services, and understanding the Canadian business environment. The entrepreneurial workshop series aims to provide a well-rounded experience for aspiring entrepreneurs and artisans alike to support their business model and strategic planning.

It’s not too late to attend the next event. Eligible individuals with start-ups or small businesses looking to gain some of these entrepreneurial skills are welcome to sign up to our Good4People community for free. The option for remote workshop attendance is also available, with complete access to extensive training and mentorship whether attendees join us in-person or online. At the end of the workshop series, a certificate of completion will be awarded to all participants to acknowledge the skills and achievements they have strengthened.

As an international organization, Good Neighbors Canada is proud to support domestic projects that serve the community and aid in growth. Once again, we thank our partner, the City of Toronto, for their support for our Good4People initiative, and we look forward to supporting our local entrepreneurial community this year.
