In response to September 9th’s tragic and shocking earthquake – the worst to hit the country in living memory – Good Neighbours International is providing relief support for Morocco.

One of a few humanitarian NGOs on the ground in Morocco, your donation will enable Good Neighbours to work in partnership with local agencies to provide immediate emergency relief and care for survivors.

The most destructive earthquake in 120 years

On Friday, September 8th 2023, an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 hit the High Atlas mountain range in Morocco, an area 72km from Marrakech, made up of rural villages amounting to about 840,000 inhabitants.

This is the hardest quake to hit Morocco in 120 years, toppling stone and masonry buildings in ancient cities  that were not designed to withstand quakes.

Some buildings in the old city of Marrakech, a UNESCO World Heritage site, have been damaged or destroyed. An estimated 380,000 people have been affected by the powerful tremors throughout the country.

So far, there have been over 3,000 deaths and 5,500 injuries reported.

We need your support to keep the survivors safe.

The rural, mountainous High Atlas area was served by single-track, unpaved roads, many of which are now partially or fully blocked due to landslides.

This has prevented ambulances and other emergency services vehicles from having free access to the affected areas, and large delivery trucks are unable to deliver relief items to villages beyond blocked roads.

Further, winter in this region comes early and can be bitterly cold, with expected snowfall of around 40cm depth by December.

Good Neighbours International is supporting the people of Morocco with food and non-food items.

We are requesting financial support and in-kind donations of bulk, new winter items such as coats, sleeping bags and winterization support.

Our thoughts are with the survivors of this earthquake, especially those for whom access to relief services has been restricted by the limitations of the rural area.

Over the coming week, Good Neighbours will be strengthening its relationships with local partners, procuring and distributing relief items, and preparing to deliver psychosocial support in partnership with local child protection and healthcare agencies.
