The most destructive earthquake in years

On Monday, February 6, 2023, an earthquake graded at 7.8 on the Richter scale struck near the border of Türkiye and Syria.

It is one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded in the Levant, and the deadliest earthquake worldwide since the 2010 Haiti earthquake. The earthquake is estimated to have caused US$84.1 billion worth of damage, making it one of the costliest natural disasters ever recorded.

There have been over 46,000 fatalities and 88,500 injuries in Türkiye and Syria*.

We need your support to keep the survivors safe.

Existing local tensions intersect to
risk further harm to survivors

This region is already home to a large population of vulnerable individuals, as a result of more than a decade of conflict. Although Good Neighbours Canada and community partners have united to provided support to families in Türkiye and Syria, the civil unrest is contributing to a challenging environment for providing relief. A lack of available food, water, and vital resources is causing tension among local people, triggering violence and further harm.
