HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF
This program is now closed.
Thank you to our community of donors who supported this program from August 15th – December 31st 2021.
Emergency relief
On August 14, 2021, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit the Nippes Department of Haiti, in the southwestern part of the country.
Destruction was widespread, especially after several landslides took place.
To make matters worse, Haitians had to endure Tropical Storm Grace just two days later. The heavy rainfalls posed a challenge not only for displaced people, but also in providing relief efforts to reach those in need.
Aftershock
As can be the case following major earthquakes, aftershocks were recorded in the area during the first weeks after the main shock – however, Nippes saw hundreds of aftershocks hit. That is more than the usual amount after an event of this magnitude.

Good Neighbors’ Support
Many schools and hospitals collapsed in the area; and since those are places where people would normally temporarily stay, Good Neighbors prioritized supporting affected individuals to find shelter.
We also focused our attentions on providing medical help, blood donations, hygiene items, water, and food.
Almost 500,000 people were vulnerable and are still struggling in the aftermath of the earthquake.
Good Neighbors provided sleeping bags, mosquito nets, flashlights, water filters, antibiotics, and masks.
Emergency kits with clean water, food, first aid, and personal hygiene supplies were also distributed to the population.
We thank all Canadians who got involved with our emergency relief efforts to make sure that those affected were kept safe.
