Providing clean water to rural communities, one well at a time
A quarter of the world’s population does not have access to clean water. That means almost 2 billion people in the world are vulnerable to water-related illnesses such as cholera and diarrhoea, risking lives and causing stunting and poor development in children.
Rural children have to spend 4 hours of their day just walking to fetch water.
35%
of Zambian children under the age of 5 are stunted, leading to child mortality and increased risk of illnesses.

Through education and sanitation initiatives, we help people to learn about the need for safe water and better washroom facilities, provide hygiene kits to better promote sanitation in our target areas, and construct durable water, sanitation and hygiene facilities to reform community practice. We make it our priority to make clean water accessible to everyone and give people the ability to maintain new systems independently.
From 2022 to 2023, cases of cholera increased by 125% in Africa.
Aside from building water purifying systems, handwashing stations, and water tanks, we also build hand pump wells. Our Wishing Well Project provides water for rural communities in Zambia, so safe drinking water is immediately accessible and children can focus on their education rather than dropping out of school to collect water for their family.
As part of our support to furthering the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, we dedicate our clean water programs to further goal #6: clean water and sanitation. This ensure available and sustainable water management and sanitation is available to all.
Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene
Health Education
Teach communities about waterborne diseases and good hygiene habits
Water Access
Make water more accessible by building wells in rural communities
Hygiene Facilities
Promote sanitation by building clean and safe toilets and other necessary water, sanitation and hygiene facilities
We used to drink water from a stream, sharing it with
animals. Our children were constantly getting sick and missing classes, but now this is a story of the past.

Make Clean Water and Sanitation Accessible
We paid a fee each
month to have access to the water, and in the months where we didn’t have the money, we would fetch dirty water from a nearby stream. When Good Neighbours supported us with the new water well, our situation changed for the better - no more diarrhoea!
We would like to show appreciation and thank you for the borehole that you put up in our school. The school had a serious problem with water but now, pupils are happy to fetch water from within the school. I wish you well as you continue doing good things to the needy.
4 Hours: The Time It Takes to Get Water
Educating Our Local Community
Raising awareness to global water issues and crisis is another part of our clean water campaign. Good Neighbours Canada actively participates yearly in the Children’s Water Festivals across Ontario to help educate children in global water challenges. We provide an immersive experience through in-person activities and a Virtual Reality Experience.
