Happy Body, Happy Mind: Promoting physical and mental health among seniors.

Senior yoga workshop

Good Neighbours Canada recognizes the importance of healthy aging – of developing habits and lifestyles that promote both a longer and better quality of life, particularly for seniors.

With this in mind, we have launched the Happy Body, Happy Mind 2026 program in partnership with Happy Senior Centre. Read on to discover how we are supporting isolated seniors with physical and psychosocial well being, vital for the betterment of healthy aging.

Why is regular exercise essential for seniors?

According to research, regular physical activity plays a critical role in maintaining health during senior years.

Especially for immigrant seniors, language barriers and social isolation often limit opportunities for physical and social activities. This program plays a vital role in enhancing their quality of life by providing both exercise and an accessible, supportive community.

Driven by consultation with Happy Senior Centre and its members, GNCA developed a three month program encompassing expertly facilitated classes of gentle yoga, balance and fall prevention, and dance exercise geared towards seniors. With an initially anticipated attendance of about 35 seniors, interest quickly grew and registrations jumped to 70. In order to accommodate the extra additions, GNCA adapted to schedule two classes per week during the three months, accommodating 35 seniors per class

May Yoga

May yoga workshop

Kicking off the program in May, Happy Senior hosted a gentle yoga class every Tuesday for four weeks throughout the month.

Although some participants expressed concerns about keeping up, our class facilitator and yoga teacher is dedicated to ensuring an inclusive introduction for all skill levels. Not long into the first class, participants were discovering the benefits of a gentle yoga practice.

“My body feels much lighter”
“Breathing deeply brings peace to my mind.”
“It gave me the confidence that I can try new exercises even at my age!”

Participants learned the movements step-by-step at their own pace. By the end of the 4 weeks, participants were much more confident in their abilities and appreciative of gentle yoga as a practice they can engage with.

“I’m over 80 and this is the first time I’ve tried this kind of exercise, but I really like it. I’d like to keep doing it little by little.”

June Outdoor Activity: Niagara Falls Trip

On June 23rd, our program participants and Happy Senior leaders embarked on a special outdoor trip to the breathtaking Niagara Falls!

Participants traveled in 4 vehicles, including a chartered bus, to spend a beautiful day recharging their minds and bodies in nature.

We kicked off our exciting day with a delicious lunch at a Mandarin restaurant, strengthening our community bonds and sharing warm conversations.

Afterward, we enjoyed a gentle hike along the scenic Niagara trails, soaking in the breathtaking scenery while participating in refreshing physical activities to boost everyone’s wellness.

Our participants spanned a wide age range, from 65 to 93 years old. Pace and distance of the walk were tailored for participants with varying abilities, ensuring everyone was able to fully enjoy the scenic views and beautiful sunny weather. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers the entire program was completed safely, smoothly, and with lots of smiles.

"After losing my husband in 2016, this is my first time visiting Niagara Falls in 10 years. I am so incredibly grateful and thankful to be here today."

"We hope our seniors continue to stay healthy and happy. We will keep running various programs to ensure our elderly community is never left isolated and can fully enjoy their golden years with fulfilling leisure activities. "

What’s Next?

While Happy Senior Centre closes its doors for the summer, Good Neighbours Canada will continue this journey with their members in the fall.

Through this, we will provide resources, exercise materials and guidance to help seniors carry on these practices and exercises in their own spaces, contributing to the prevention of chronic physical and mental illnesses such as arthritis, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
